The Final Judgment

The day is fast approaching when all who have ever lived will have their lives reviewed before the all-knowing God. But don't be alarmed — millions have found this message to be very good news!

Theme Verse

"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ." — 2 Corinthians 5:10

Three Phases of the Final Judgment

The Bible mentions judgment more than a thousand times. Almost every Bible writer refers to it, so its importance cannot be overstated.

This study reveals that there are three distinct phases of the final judgment — watch for them as you study this lesson!

Phase 1

The Pre-Advent Judgment

Before Christ's Second Coming

1

Who Will Be Considered in the First Phase, and When Does It End?

Key Scriptures

  • 1 Peter 4:17
  • Revelation 22:11–12

Bible Truth

The pre-advent judgment ends just before the second coming of Jesus. Those who claimed to be Christians — alive or dead — will be considered in this phase.

Key Insight

The beginning date of this judgment is established in 1844 through the prophecy of Daniel. It is already underway.

Discussion Question

What does it mean to you that the judgment began before Christ returns?

2

Who Presides at the Judgment?

Key Scriptures

  • Daniel 7:9–10
  • 1 John 2:1
  • John 5:22
  • Revelation 12:9–10

Bible Truth

God the Father presides. Satan is your only accuser. Jesus — who loves you — serves as your attorney, judge, and witness. He promises judgment will be made in favor of the saints.

Key Insight

In the heavenly court, you are not alone. Jesus is on your side, and He is both your defender and your judge.

Discussion Question

How does knowing Jesus is your advocate change how you view the judgment?

3

What Is the Source of Evidence and Standard of Judgment?

Key Scriptures

  • Daniel 7:10
  • Revelation 20:12
  • James 2:12
  • Romans 8:1

Bible Truth

Evidence comes from heavenly books recording all details of one's life. The Ten Commandment law is God's standard. The judgment confirms there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.

Key Insight

The judgment is not to inform God — He is already fully informed. It is to answer questions for angels and unfallen worlds, vindicating God's character.

Discussion Question

Why would God need to demonstrate fairness to angels and unfallen worlds?

4

What Portion of Life Is Reviewed? How Are Rewards Decided?

Key Scriptures

  • Ecclesiastes 12:14
  • Matthew 13:30,41
  • Revelation 22:12
  • James 2:26

Bible Truth

Every detail of life will be reviewed — including secret thoughts and hidden actions. The judgment confirms who will be saved among those who claimed to be Christians.

Key Insight

Although we are saved by grace, rewards are given based on works and conduct — which prove the genuineness of a Christian's faith.

Discussion Question

What is the difference between being saved by grace and being rewarded by works?

Phase 2

The Millennial Judgment

The 1,000 Years in Heaven

5

What Group Is Involved During the 1,000 Years?

Key Scriptures

  • 1 Corinthians 6:2–3
  • Revelation 20:4

Bible Truth

The saved people of all ages — taken to heaven at the second coming — will participate in this second phase, reviewing the lives of the lost and Satan's angels.

Key Insight

The saints will have the opportunity to see the full record and have every question about God's justice answered before the final sentencing.

Discussion Question

Why would God give the saints the opportunity to review the judgment records?

6

What Happens to the Lost and to Satan During the 1,000 Years?

Key Scriptures

  • Revelation 20:1–3,5
  • Jeremiah 4:23–26

Bible Truth

Satan is bound on a desolate earth with no one to tempt. The wicked dead remain in their graves. The earth lies empty and in ruins.

Key Insight

The 1,000 years is a time of review and rest for the redeemed, and a time of confinement and reflection for Satan.

Discussion Question

What does a desolate, empty earth during the millennium suggest about the consequences of sin?

Phase 3

The Executive Judgment

The Final Eradication of Sin

7

What Happens When the 1,000 Years End?

Key Scriptures

  • Revelation 20:5,7–9
  • Zechariah 14:1–5

Bible Truth

The wicked dead are resurrected and Satan is released. The Holy City descends from heaven and Satan gathers the wicked to attack it.

Key Insight

Even after 1,000 years, Satan has not repented. His first act upon release is to organize rebellion against God.

Discussion Question

What does Satan's immediate return to rebellion reveal about the nature of unrepentant sin?

8

What Interrupts Their Battle Plan?

Key Scriptures

  • Revelation 20:11–12
  • Philippians 2:10–11

Bible Truth

The wicked are confronted with the full record of their lives. Every knee bows and every tongue confesses that God is just. The lost acknowledge their guilt and God's fairness.

Key Insight

Before the final destruction, every lost person will understand and admit that God's judgment is right. God's character is fully vindicated.

Discussion Question

Why is it important to God that even the lost acknowledge His justice?

9

What Final Steps Eradicate Sin from the Universe?

Key Scriptures

  • Revelation 20:9,14–15
  • Malachi 4:1–3
  • Revelation 21:1–5

Bible Truth

Fire descends from heaven, consuming the wicked and Satan. Sin, sinners, and the devil are destroyed — and God creates a new heaven and a new earth.

Key Insight

The lake of fire is not eternal torment — it is the second death. Sin is completely and permanently eradicated, and God's creation is restored.

Discussion Question

How does understanding the "second death" bring comfort and reflect God's character?

10

How Did the Day of Atonement Symbolize the Judgment?

Key Scriptures

  • Leviticus 16
  • Hebrews 9:23–28

Bible Truth

The ancient Day of Atonement sanctuary service symbolized the cleansing of sin from God's heavenly sanctuary, pointing forward to the final judgment and restoration.

Key Insight

The entire Old Testament sanctuary system was a shadow of the heavenly realities. Jesus fulfilled every detail as our High Priest.

Discussion Question

How does the sanctuary service help us understand what Jesus is doing for us in heaven right now?

The Good News About the Judgment

On four occasions in Revelation, the announcement of the great judgment brings forth praise and thanksgiving. Why? Because God promises to acquit everyone who invites Jesus into their life and permits Him to remain in control.

Jesus is not your prosecutor — He is your advocate. The judgment is not something to dread; it is the final demonstration of God's love, justice, and mercy to the entire universe.

Optional Quiz

For Group Study

  1. What are the three phases of the final judgment?
  2. Who is your advocate (attorney) in the heavenly judgment?
  3. What standard is used to judge people in the pre-advent judgment?
  4. What do the saints do during the 1,000 years?
  5. What happens to Satan at the end of the 1,000 years?
  6. How does the judgment end for the wicked and for sin?

Final Appeal

Will You Invite Him Today?

God promises to acquit you in the heavenly judgment if you invite Jesus to enter your life and permit Him to remain in control.

The jury is in — but the verdict is in your favor if Jesus is your Lord. The case is closed with grace, not condemnation, for all who are in Christ Jesus.

"Lord Jesus, I invite You into my life. Be my advocate and my Savior. I trust in Your grace and ask You to represent me in the judgment. In Your name, Amen."
